Cologuard added to national quality measures

Cologuard, the home-based stool test by Exact Sciences of Madison, is now included in a measurement of how doctors and clinics are evaluated for colorectal cancer screening nationally, which could prompt more use of the test, the company said Monday.

The National Committee for Quality Assurance included Cologuard in quality measures for 2017 known as the Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set, or HEDIS. The measures are used to audit the performance of doctors, health systems and insurers.

Doctors and health insurance plans increasingly are given financial incentives to improve scores on indicators such as the percentage of patients screened for colorectal cancer. With Cologuard included in HEDIS, doctors can use the test, instead of alternatives such as colonoscopy, to demonstrate that patients have been screened.
